Common questions
The things people usually ask before we run a single foot of cable.
What is the difference between CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6a, and CAT8?
These categories describe how much speed and distance an Ethernet cable can reliably support. CAT5e is the most affordable option and handles gigabit (1,000 Mbps) speeds over standard run lengths — a solid fit for most homes and small offices. CAT6 offers better shielding and can reach 10 Gbps, but only over shorter distances (up to about 180 feet); beyond that, it drops back to gigabit speeds. CAT6a delivers a full 10 Gbps across the entire standard cable run (up to roughly 328 feet) with improved interference resistance, making it the better choice for anyone who wants their wiring to support faster speeds well into the future. CAT8 supports extremely high speeds (up to 40 Gbps) but only over very short distances (about 100 feet), making it a specialty cable for data centers and server rooms rather than home or business wiring.
For most residential customers, CAT6 is a cost-effective choice; for businesses or anyone planning ahead, CAT6a is usually the smarter long-term investment. Contact us if you're not sure which is right for your project.
Why is my WiFi weak in certain rooms, and do I need a mesh system or additional access points?
This depends on multiple factors, such as what type of modem and router you're using, how big your home is, and whether your router is centralized or tucked into a secluded part of the house. There are a variety of solutions MT Cabling can help you implement.
If you prefer the freedom of WiFi over being tethered to an Ethernet cable, both mesh systems and wireless access points (WAP or AP) are a great option to expand your WiFi footprint. Access points will typically require an Ethernet cable run to them, along with a router or switch that offers Power over Ethernet (PoE). Mesh systems may have a smaller broadcast range per unit, but can be as simple as plugging one into a wall outlet.
What's the difference between a modem and a router, and do I need both?
A modem is the piece of equipment that receives your connectivity from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). A router is the equipment that broadcasts your WiFi signal or connects to your Ethernet cables. It's common today to have them combined into a single box. If you're unsure how your network is set up today, give us a call and we'll be happy to walk you through it.
Can you run Ethernet to specific rooms instead of relying on WiFi?
Absolutely. While WiFi is great for quick accessibility, it comes with some added latency and will also be impacted by distance or obstructions between your device and the access point. MT Cabling specializes in installing new Ethernet lines directly to wherever you'd like them. Hardline connections perform faster and have reduced latency compared to WiFi.
Will running new cabling disrupt my existing internet service?
No — if existing cables are being replaced, there may be minimal disruption when swapping the physical connection to your modem or router. Otherwise, new cables are pulled, terminated, and tested before any existing cables are disconnected.
Should I wire now for future needs even if I don't need it today?
This is never a bad idea. Human advances are fast, but technology is faster. MT Cabling standardizes residential installs with CAT6 cabling. As ISPs continue expanding fiber optic infrastructure, faster internet speeds are becoming available to more residential properties — CAT6 cable can handle up to 10 Gbps, where CAT5e, while slightly less expensive, maxes out at 1 Gbps.
